Thank you to everyone who joined us for a special beacon lighting at Coronation Park last night as we marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

It was important that we joined communities across the world who came together to remember and thank all those who served and sacrificed 80 years ago to secure the peace and freedoms we enjoy today.

The evening began with an address by the Rev Drew Cox of Connect Church and Rev Steve Payne from Egloshayle Parish Church followed by a tribute by the Royal British Legion and a minute’s silence of remembrance. The Mayor, Cllr Ian Welch read the International Tribute with the beacon lit at 9.15pm by Deputy Mayor Cllr Kelly Rowe. Cllr Welch concluded with a remembrance toast ‘ On this 80th anniversary of D-Day, we raise our glasses to those who risked their everything as they arrived on the beaches of Normandy. Their courage and immense sacrifice turned the tide of World War II. We honour the fallen and the veterans who survived who provided us all with our liberty and freedom’.

We will remember them.
