History of a Library in Wadebridge
‘library’, traditionally, collection of books used for reading or study, or the building or room in which such a collection is kept.
The Wadebridge Institute, also known as the Literary Institute, was built in 1838 close to the medieval bridge, housed the first public subscription library and reading room.
Wadebridge Cornwall County Library opened at the Boy’s School on Thursdays for one hour per week.
The library reopened in the late 1940s within the North Cornwall District Council Offices on Hill Road until 1989.
The current library building was opened by Dr Charles Causley CBE on Tuesday 6th June 1989. Built on the old approach road to Wadebridge Railway Station and carefully designed to complement the former station building, now Concern Wadebridge. The goods shed single chimney provides the distinctive point of reference.
Offering a greatly improved Library and Information Service in a building where there is something for everyone. Open planning makes it easy to use, adapt or change for exhibitions, information, study and leisure.
