Wadebridge Town Council has recently installed a white post box at Egloshayle Cemetery to provide a quiet and meaningful way for people to stay connected with loved ones they have lost and miss.
This special ‘Letters to Loved Ones’ post box is available to everyone visiting the cemetery to post letters and cards to their loved ones who are no longer with them.
Wadebridge Town Council completely understands the upset and anguish that the loss of a loved one may cause and that grief affects everyone differently. There is no right or wrong way to manage grief, it is a personal journey with no timeframe. We hope that this post box will provide some comfort to those who feel they would like to send messages to their loved ones knowing that every message will be treated with kindness and respect and will remain private.
No need for a stamp – your letters and cards do not need a stamp, simply seal them with love and post them into the box. The post box is owned and cared for by Wadebridge Town Council.
All of the messages will be treated confidentially and with complete respect. They will never be opened or shared. On the last Friday of each month the messages will be respectfully removed from the box and shredded. This material will then be composted and later used within the cemetery grounds by the Parks team while they are maintaining flower beds or replanting. This allows the messages to be returned to the cemetery and become part of the peaceful surroundings.
The history of white post boxes - the first white post box was the idea of nine-year old Matilda Handy from Nottingham. Matilda wanted a special place where she could send birthday and Christmas cards to her grandparents and with her mother’s help they came up with the idea for a ‘Letters to Heaven’ post box. This first post box was installed at Gedling Crematorium, near Nottingham, where Matilda’s mother is a Memorial Adviser, in late 2022 just before Christmas time.
Since that time, white post boxes have become a feature in many crematoriums and cemeteries across the country, providing comfort to those who wish to send a message to their missed loved ones.

Each summer, Wadebridge Town Council helps brighten the town with a colourful display of hanging baskets, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
The hanging baskets are carefully selected and maintained throughout the season, adding vibrant colour to the streets while enhancing the appearance of the town centre and supporting Wadebridge's reputation as an attractive place to live, work and visit.
The displays are part of the Council's ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality public spaces, encouraging civic pride and supporting the local economy by making the town an inviting destination for shoppers and tourists.
Our Parks and Grounds Team work hard behind the scenes to install, water and care for the baskets throughout the summer months, ensuring they remain healthy and colourful for everyone to enjoy.
Wadebridge Town Council is proud to invest in initiatives such as the hanging baskets that help keep our town looking its very best

After serving as Deputy Mayor alongside Councillor Ian Welch since May 2025, Councillor Jules Metcalfe has now been appointed as the Mayor of Wadebridge.
Jules has already played an active role in supporting both the Council and the wider community. Over the years, Jules has been involved in a number of important community events and initiatives, including attending the opening of the Changing Places toilets, helping to present awards at the annual Wadebridge Carnival, and taking part in judging the town’s VE Day 80 Bake Off celebrations.
As Deputy Mayor, Jules has worked closely alongside Ian, supporting civic events and representing the Council at community occasions across Wadebridge. Jules is well known for her enthusiasm, community spirit and commitment to supporting local organisations.
Wadebridge Town Council is delighted to welcome Jules into the role of Mayor and looks forward to supporting her during the year ahead.
Councillor Metcalfe said:
“I want to thank Ian for his service as Mayor of Wadebridge for the last three and a half years. Ian has worked tirelessly for the benefit of Wadebridge and his wealth of experience as a Councillor has always been used to great effect. It has not been an easy period with the aftereffects of the Covid pandemic and associated financial constraints. Most notably, Ian presided over the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the associated period of mourning.
I am delighted to say that Ian has agreed to remain as a councillor, and I know I will be relying on his expertise over the coming months.
I would also like to thank Cllr Kelly Rowe for offering to step back up as Deputy Mayor; this is very much appreciated. I would also like to mention the fantastic job Anne Minnis does as our Town Clerk. You couldn’t wish for a better Clerk incredibly experienced and ensuring we all keep within the rules, for which we are a better Council. Thanks also go to all the office staff and employees who keep the town looking so attractive and running so smoothly.
I look forward to working closely with our two Cornwall Councillors, ensuring this relationship is open and supportive, as this will bring real benefit to Wadebridge.
I am greatly honoured to be able to fully participate in the upcoming ceremonial duties on behalf of the Council and the town as Mayor. I also hope to meet as many parishioners as I can and intend to set up Mayor’s surgeries over the coming months. I am keen to foster closer relationships between the various groups within the town.
My final thanks go to my fellow Councillors for electing me as Mayor, and I look forward to working together over the next year. We have a number of exciting projects we are hoping to progress, and we also hope to push for a Governance Review of our boundaries so that we can more accurately reflect the population of the town and utilise the additional revenue to progress projects including, but not exclusively, The Platt Toilets, an Inclusive Play Area, and improvements to the Skate Park with the addition of lighting and a pump track.
We are all volunteers who want to see this wonderful town thrive with the support of everyone who lives here.”

Egloshayle Park – Sandpit
We were made aware today of concerns regarding an incident at the sandpit in Egloshayle Park, where it has been reported that a child may have stepped on a needle. At the time of the incident, no needle was seen or recovered by the family member present.
In response, Town Council staff carried out a full inspection of the sandpit today. This included completely emptying the sandpit and carefully examining its contents. No needle or hazardous object was found during this process.
We have been in direct contact with the family to discuss the matter and provide reassurance. We fully recognise how serious and concerning this situation is and would like to assure the public that we treat all such reports with the utmost importance.
Our play areas are inspected daily by our Parks Team to ensure they remain safe and suitable for public use. The safety and wellbeing of all members of the community remains our highest priority, and we will continue to maintain and monitor our facilities to the highest standards.

NEW YEAR'S EVE FIREWORKS – MOVING FORWARD
What We're Delivering for the Community
The Town Council is committed to supporting Wadebridge with a wide range of activities and events. This year we have provided:
- Funding for community groups via our Grant process
• VE and VJ Day commemoration events
• Christmas lights
• Free use of council land and car parks for Wadebridge Carnival
• Outdoor cinema event
• Children's Christmas party for parish families
• Community pantomime
• Free car parking for late-night shopping events
We know there has been interest in New Year’s Eve Fireworks in Wadebridge, and we want to provide the full context behind our decisions.
🗳️ The Consultation Process
We ran a 4 week public consultation on fireworks use on council land. While we can't visit every household individually, the consultation was open and accessible, and all feedback was carefully considered in our decision making.
⚠️ Why Event Management Is Complex
New Year's Eve fireworks aren't simply about setting off fireworks. They require comprehensive event management including health and safety planning, risk assessments, insurance, stewarding, crowd and traffic management, emergency planning, and coordination with emergency services. Road safety for large numbers of pedestrians needs careful management with adequate marshalling. This carries significant responsibility and cost for the Council.
⚖️ Balancing Competing Priorities
At the time of the consultation, fireworks took place on several occasions throughout the year on council land. Considering the consultation responses received we acknowledged environmental concerns by reducing fireworks events from four to two, while preserving tradition and cultural significance.
We sought to strike a balance between community enjoyment, safety, disruption, environmental concerns, and affordability. We therefore decided to enable Guy Fawkes Night fireworks to continue (delivered by and at the Rugby Club), while stopping fireworks at the Carnival and late-night shopping and ending funding for New Year's Eve fireworks.
💰 The Financial Reality
The New Year's Eve fireworks display was originally intended as a one-off event for the year 2000 but has continued for 25 years. As a small Town Council with limited resources, we must carefully prioritise how we allocate funding across our activities and services.
After 25 years of providing this event, we reviewed this alongside our other commitments and, in particular, the safe management of the event. We approached the Town Team to enquire whether businesses – particularly those trading on New Year's Eve – would be willing to contribute. Unfortunately, and with understanding given the economic climate, no funding was secured.
Future Opportunities
The Council hasn’t ruled out New Year's Eve fireworks entirely. If an external group wishes to fund and fully organise the event, and all health and safety requirements are met, the Council will consider the proposal.
📧 Please contact the Town Clerk at for guidance on the requirements. Requests must be submitted by end of May for consideration at June's Full Council meeting.
💬 We Value Your Input
We value hearing directly from residents and welcome constructive dialogue. Please email the Clerk at 📧 with your thoughts or questions. We read every message, and your input helps inform our decisions.
Facebook discussions on other pages don't reach us, and we'd like to hear from you directly – and provide accurate information that sometimes gets lost on social media.
🙏 Thank you
